Guide to Service Dog Vests
A service dog vest is a harness of some kind that may or may not be worn by the service animal at any given time.
Animals-in-training typically wear vests that read “Service Dog”, but this is often only during training, and unless the handler requires one for their disability, animals will generally not wear them once they’ve graduated from the program.
However, vests are still useful even after animals have completed training and no longer need to identify as such. Vest-wearing dogs allow businesses and other establishments to easily recognize and accommodate handlers with disabilities – especially those who use mobility scooters or wheelchairs – without having to ask whether the person has a disability before allowing them entry into an establishment.
Handlers can also opt to wear vests with the words “In Training” on them in order to avoid confrontations while taking animals-in-training out in public.
Several types of vests
Nylon Service Dog Vest
This is a nylon vest with “Service Dog” embroidered on the left side in white stitching, which will not fade or bleed if it gets wet. Each letter is about an inch high, and there is one line at most beneath the letters to allow handlers enough room to write their names on the other side. The handle can be written directly onto the vest without any issues at all, though some people may prefer to use a permanent marker for maximal durability.
Padded Nylon Service Dog Vest
This is basically the same as the first type of vest listed except that there is a layer of foam sewn between the nylon and the underside, making it much more comfortable for animals to wear. Each letter is about half an inch high, and as such handlers will generally write their names on the handle rather than directly onto the vest itself.
This type of vest comes with “Service Dog” embroidered on it in white stitching and lined with fleece so that your animal will be nice and warm while wearing this type of vest. You can still write your name on either side of the handle if you need to, but keep in mind that since this material is slightly thicker than most types of vests it may be difficult to read someone’s writing if they’ve written their contact information down directly onto the vest.
