Guide to Safe Dog Foods.
First of all, some background information on how to select safe dog food.
Dog’s needs vary with size and age so it is important to read the label carefully before buying or feeding any pet. All dogs should be fed good quality food every day.
Protein comes from meat sources, not plants (corn). Protein is also necessary for muscle and bone growth. Look for fat content of no more than 10 percent, which is a good balance for your pet’s diet.
Carbohydrates from plant sources provide energy for your dog. Preferred carbohydrates are from whole grains, not corn or other fillers that provide little nutritional value. Fiber aids dog digestion by moving food through the system faster, so look for digestibility claims such as “easy to digest” or “highly digestible.”
Vitamins A, D & E keep bones strong and aid digestion. Vitamin C strengthens immunity and helps wounds heal properly. B vitamins help metabolism function at peak efficiency. Iron is necessary to produce hemoglobin (which carries oxygen in red blood cells) so for iron-containing foods with natural sources of vitamin C (to aid iron absorption).
Look for products with quality ingredients from a trusted source. Sources should be specified on the label and prominently displayed in the brand name. Ingredients are listed in descending order by weight, so look at the first few items to see which make up the most of the food.
There is also an ingredient called “by-products,” which can mean anything from road kill to horse meat. By-products provide very little nutritional value and are indigestible to dogs, but they do add flavor that attracts your pet’s attention to feed time.
