Guide to Lifetime Dog Foods
What is the best food for my dog? This is a very common question and finding an answer can be difficult, especially considering that every company claims to have your pet’s best interest in mind. What most people don’t realize is that all companies put out good quality foods; it’s up to you as the consumer to determine which diet works best for your dog.
There are basically four types of dog foods: premium (or premium-plus), mid-range or moderate, low end, and natural or holistic.
Premium dog foods use better ingredients and higher percentages of meat than their lower-tier counterparts. Their target market is mainly consumers with large dogs who require more calories per day and those willing to pay a little extra money for better quality food. Premium or premium-plus foods are usually the recommended diets for large breed puppies, active performance dogs, elderly dogs with diminished appetites, and working/service dogs on a 24/7 shift schedule. Ingredients of premium foods can include fresh meats (e.g., chicken, lamb), whole grains, multiple meat meal sources (not just one source that guarantees quick weight gainer), low-fat percentages to help reduce cases of bloat, etc. These kibbles are also great for dog owners who own more than one large breed dog because their higher protein content can help them maintain an ideal body weight despite being able to eat more calories per day.
Mid-range / moderate foods have ingredients that are of lower grades than those for foods in the premium category but are still of higher quality than low-end foods. Moderate foods are great for dogs experiencing allergies or other skin problems because they usually don’t contain grains (which can cause allergic reactions in some dogs) and come in small bits that are easy to digest.
Low-end dog foods use lower grade ingredients like meat by-products, animal digest (essentially food waste), grain fragments, etc. because they’re cheaper to produce; these types of kibbles aren’t as easily digested as those with finer textures and as such can cause bloating and diarrhea. Low-end foods tend to be more appropriate for elderly dogs with diminished appetites who require smaller quantities of food each day. However, performance dogs on high-calorie diets, pregnant and lactating dogs, etc.
