Guide to Food Dogs

Dog foods are important to dogs. Regular food selection is important to dogs.

What are commercial dog foods?

BARF, canned, or dry. You might be surprised that I’ve included canned dog foods in here but it’s true. Canned foods are becoming more popular because they tend to have higher nutritional value than other types of commercial foods do.

First off, what is BARF? It’s an acronym that stands for Biologically Appropriate Raw Food or Bones And Raw Food. This means that this type of dog food comes in the form of raw meat and bones. Dogs are carnivores which means they’re made to eat meat-based diets daily. Barf proponents say that dogs should eat like their ancestors did– naturally and naturally only. Pet owners with a history of hunting will be more familiar with this kind of diet because it reflects how wild wolves eat too.

Barf diets provide many benefits but there are also drawbacks to consider as well before moving forward into including this in your own dog’s menu:

1.) It takes time and effort. You have to research the safest meats for your dog, cut them up into bite-sized pieces, and store these in the fridge. If you’re really serious about this kind of food then you’ll have to freeze some for later meals too.

2.) It’s expensive.  This type of diet is much more costly than other types which can be difficult if you’re on a budget because you feel like your dog won’t get enough nutritional value with just one type of food. This means that BARF diets are suitable for people who want the best quality possible without worrying so much about price points.

3.) You can’t feed bones.  Dogs love bones but feeding them bones isn’t safe according to pet experts– especially since they can easily splinter and become lodged in the dog’s throat, mouth, or gut. Cooked bones are especially dangerous because they dry out and can also split into pieces that are small enough for your four-legged friend to swallow.

Dogs who eat raw meat have to watch their weight very carefully or else they run the risk of becoming obese which is why BARF diets alone may not be enough for obese dogs.
