Guide to Air Valves
Air valves are used to control the flow of air into your tires. This is essential for proper inflation and tire function. The Schrader valve (or “American”) was developed in the early 1900s by bicycle enthusiasts who wanted an efficient, lightweight design that could be easily removed from the wheel for patching flats. The valves worked so well they were quickly adapted to other forms of transportation including cars, motorcycles, airplanes, bicycles, and eventually even space exploration.
The Presta valve was first designed by Frenchman Edouard Seynhaeve in 1882 as a solution to problems cyclists faced repairing their tubular tires without removing them from the rim. While working at Tressol Brothers Cycles company he developed it further into what we know today as the Presta valve. Tressel was later bought by Schwinn, the Presta valve was employed on their high-end bikes and eventually copied by other manufacturers.
The Schrader valve consists of a rubber “bung” with two metal tubes inside. One tube has a spring-loaded pin that is pressed against the top of the bung by air pressure when you press it into the wheel rim. When you remove the core, this causes it to open and let out all your precious air. The other tube attaches to an outside pump head, which allows you to fill up your tire quickly and easily without removing it from the rim.
Benefits of valve
Tire valves are critical safety devices that should be in good condition at all times. If they become damaged or if their protective rubber bungs are missing, they can leak or become clogged, causing tires to lose pressure quickly and possibly resulting in tire failure. Replacing a faulty valve is a good precaution to take when you have a flat, don’t want to lose any more air, and need to put on a spare.
Another thing to check before installing a new tire or even checking the pressure in your tires is the condition of your valves. You should also check your rim tape for any tears or other problems that might cause an air leak. Some wheels use locking security tabs over the ends of the valves to avoid losing them while making sure they don’t fall out during use. These are only effective if you tighten them properly, so make sure it’s really secure before adding air!
